This coming week, we will be holding an abstract feedback workshop on Tues 27 Sept, at 3.30pm in the Wolf Wölck Seminar Room (603 Baldy Hall). (Please note the later start time!) Everyone, from every area of linguistics is welcome (no sociolinguistics required this week!), and it would be great to see folks who are new to abstract-writing as well as folks who have more experience writing and reviewing abstracts.
The abstract workshop will be a hands-on workshop, so to get the most out of the session, bring a draft abstract along with you --- this can be a draft abstract for a conference, for journal submission, or a "just for practice" draft (this can be a great way to organise ideas when you're drafting a project). During the session we will be giving each other feedback and tips. If possible, bring your draft set up on a laptop as a Word .doc or .docx with track changes enabled . If you are not able to bring a laptop or Word document, please print your draft and bring along a pen/pencil (or email me). No PDF or LaTeX files, please! To receive more targeted feedback, write the conference/journal you are submitting to at the top of your abstract.
The goals of the session are to
-learn how to write an effective abstract
-get practice reviewing and giving helpful constructive feedback
-get updates on the ace work that our colleagues are doing
If you're considering submitting an abstract or paper, talk to advisors and check the LinguistList conference calls listings, to get an idea of what conferences and conference deadlines are coming up. Each conference will have its own requirements for how long an abstract should be, and what themes they will consider: http://linguistlist.org/summerschool/index.cfm
